How to Trade Gold During FOMC: A Practical Plan for Retail Traders

The safest way to trade gold during FOMC is to stay out of the first few minutes, cut your lot size, use a wider stop and enter only after price shows a clear structure. FOMC stands for Federal Open Market Committee, the group at the US Federal Reserve that sets interest rates. The next decision is on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, and gold is already moving fast ahead of it. This guide shows you a step by step plan, with real numbers, so one news candle does not damage your account.

Why the Fed Moves Gold So Much

Gold pays no interest. When US interest rates or bond yields go up, holding gold looks less attractive, and the price often falls. When rate expectations drop, gold usually gets support. FOMC day is where those expectations change in a few minutes.

The market is already tense. Spot gold traded near $4,020 on 23 October after a sharp fall on Thursday, and it was on track for its weakest week since June. Gold is also far below its record of about $5,602 from January 2026. Traders are watching oil prices and strong US jobs data, because both keep talk of a December rate hike alive.

For this meeting, the market expects the Fed to hold rates. The CME FedWatch tool showed about a 93% chance of no change. That matters, because when the decision matches expectations, the first move is often small. The bigger swings usually come later, during the press conference.

FOMC time in Bangladesh

The statement comes at 2:00 pm New York time, and the chair holds a press conference at 2:30 pm. On 28 October the US is still on daylight saving time, so that is 18:00 and 18:30 UTC. In Bangladesh (UTC+6) this is 12:00 am and 12:30 am, so it falls just after midnight on 29 October. The US clocks change on 1 November, so the December meeting will fall one hour later for you. Always check your own economic calendar before the event.

This meeting has no new dot plot (the Fed’s chart of rate forecasts). Without it, the press conference carries more weight, and the chair’s words can move gold in either direction.

Three Ways Traders Approach FOMC

MethodHow it worksMain riskMy view
Trade before the newsEnter early, guess the outcomePure guessing, wide spread at releaseAvoid
StraddleBuy stop above, sell stop below, cancel the other oneSlippage, and both orders can triggerAdvanced only
Wait and trade the structureLet the spike finish, then trade a clear levelLate entry, smaller rewardBest for most traders

A straddle sounds clever, but gold can spike up, trigger your buy, then reverse and trigger your sell. You then take two losses from one event. Spreads (the gap between buy and sell price) also widen at the release, so your entry is filled worse than you planned. Many traders in our community lose money here because they treat news as a lottery ticket.

The wait and see approach is less exciting. It also keeps your account alive, which matters more than catching the first dollar of the move.

How to Trade Gold During FOMC: Step by Step

  1. Check the rules of your account first. If you trade a prop firm account, read the news rule before anything else (more on this below).
  2. Mark the pre-news range. On the 15 minute chart, draw the high and low of the last two to three hours before the statement. These are your reference levels.
  3. Close or protect open trades. If you hold a trade into the event, move the stop to a safe level or reduce size. Do not add to a position before the release.
  4. Do not click during the first minutes. Let the statement spike and the first reaction pass. Many traders wait until the press conference is well under way.
  5. Wait for a 15 minute candle to close. You want a close back inside the range after a spike (a failed breakout), or a clean close outside it with a retest.
  6. Place the stop beyond the spike extreme. Give it a few dollars extra for slippage. Accept that the stop will be wider than on a normal day.
  7. Cut your lot size so the dollar risk stays the same. A wider stop means a smaller position. Use the formula in our lot size guide.
  8. Check reward against risk. If the target is less than 1.5 times your risk, skip the trade. There will be another setup.

Worked Example: Sizing a Gold Trade on FOMC Night

These numbers are an example to show the method. They are not a signal. Assume a $10,000 account and a risk limit of 1% per trade, which is $100. On most platforms, 1 lot of XAUUSD is 100 ounces, so a $1 move in gold equals $100 per 1 lot. Check the contract size on your own platform.

Normal day

You use a $10 stop. Lot size = $100 / ($10 x 100) = 0.10 lots.

FOMC night

Say gold trades in a range between $4,000 and $4,040 before the statement. After the news, price spikes to $4,055, then falls back and a 15 minute candle closes at $4,022, back inside the range. You see a failed breakout and plan a sell.

  • Entry: $4,022
  • Stop loss: $4,058 (spike high plus $3 for slippage)
  • Risk per ounce: $36
  • Target: $3,961 (a support area some analysts are watching)
  • Reward per ounce: $61
  • Reward to risk: about 1.7 to 1

Lot size = $100 / ($36 x 100) = 0.028 lots. Round down to 0.02 lots. If the stop is hit, you lose about $72. If the target is hit, you make about $122.

Look at the difference. On a normal day you would trade 0.10 lots. On FOMC night you trade 0.02 lots, one fifth of the size. The dollar risk is the same, but the position can breathe through the noise.

If price does not give you a clean setup, you do nothing. No trade is a valid result on FOMC night. Some of the best account protection comes from skipping the event.

FOMC Trading Rules on Prop Firm Accounts

Prop firm traders face two extra problems on news day: the news rule and the daily loss limit.

News window rules

Many forex prop firms block opening or closing trades for 2 minutes before and after high impact news. For example, FTMO applies this on its Standard funded accounts, while evaluation phases usually allow news trading. Rules differ between firms and change over time, so read the current rules for your exact account type. A stop loss or take profit that triggers inside the window can also count as a violation at some firms. Do not assume anything. Check, and if you are unsure, stay flat.

Daily drawdown

On a $10,000 account with a 5% daily loss limit, your limit is $500. If your firm uses equity based drawdown, floating losses count at once, even if the trade later recovers. A sudden $30 spike against a 0.10 lot position is a $300 floating loss in seconds. That is why smaller size matters more than a good entry.

My simple guide is to risk no more than 1% on an FOMC trade, and never allow two news trades to use up more than half of your daily limit. If you want the full position sizing process, start with the lot size guide linked above.

Where Elliott Wave and Price Action Fit In

Elliott Wave counts are weak in the minutes around a central bank decision, because news can create a spike that does not follow normal wave structure. I do not trade a wave count into the release. I use it after the event to judge whether a move looks like a correction or a new impulse (a strong move in one direction).

Price action is more useful. The pre-news range high and low, the spike extreme and the 15 minute close tell you what the market accepted and what it rejected.

Current context is bearish for gold. One published view puts support broken near $4,075, with the next area around $3,961 and a deeper zone near $3,893. Another analyst sees the June low area near $3,960 to $3,940. A daily close back above $4,075 would weaken the bearish view, and a move above that area after the Fed would open a recovery toward higher levels. Treat these as opinions about probabilities, not certainties. If your sell setup fails and price closes above your stop zone, accept the loss and do not chase.

Common FOMC Mistakes in Gold

  • Keeping the normal lot size and a normal stop. Gold can move several dollars in seconds, so the stop gets hit by noise.
  • Placing a market order at the exact release. The fill price can be far from what you see on the screen.
  • Moving the stop away after price goes against you.
  • Revenge trading after an early stop. Beginners often take three or four trades in one hour and break the daily loss limit.
  • Ignoring the second event. The press conference can reverse the first reaction, and US GDP data comes the next day.
  • Trading with an EA (automated robot) that has no news filter.

Never risk money you cannot afford to lose. Fast markets can gap past your stop, and your loss can be larger than planned.

A Note for Traders in Bangladesh

Forex Wave Expert states this clearly: investing or depositing money with forex brokers from Bangladesh is illegal under Bangladesh foreign exchange rules. The Foreign Exchange Regulation Act 1947 gives Bangladesh Bank control over foreign exchange dealing, and Bangladesh Bank has issued public warnings against illegal online forex trading. It does not allow sending money abroad for online forex trading.

Be careful of IBs (introducing brokers) who push people to deposit only to earn commission. Many people lose money this way. Forex Wave Expert does not encourage any Bangladeshi to invest with a forex broker.

The path we support is simple. Learn properly, take a prop firm challenge, and after you pass, bring the payout into Bangladesh through the bank as remittance. Keep your payout documents and follow the bank’s process. You can read more in our article on forex trading legality in Bangladesh. We also run educational courses useful for the Bangladesh stock market and prop firm trading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does gold go up or down after FOMC?

It depends on how the decision compares with what the market expected. Hawkish news (higher rates, or hints of more hikes) usually pushes gold down, and dovish news usually supports it. Gold often moves both ways within the same hour, so wait for structure before taking a side.

Is it safe to hold a gold trade through FOMC?

It is risky. Spreads widen, slippage is common and price can jump past your stop. If you do hold, use a smaller lot size and a stop loss that fits the extra volatility. On prop firm accounts, check if the news rule allows existing trades to stay open.

How long should I wait after the FOMC statement before trading gold?

There is no fixed time. Many traders wait for at least one full 15 minute candle to close after the statement, and some wait until the press conference is well under way. The aim is to trade a clear level, not the first spike.

What lot size should I use for gold on news day?

Work backwards from your risk. Decide on 1% of your account, measure the wider stop in dollars, then divide. A $36 stop on a $10,000 account gives about 0.02 lots, compared with 0.10 lots for a $10 stop.

Can I trade FOMC on a prop firm challenge?

Many firms allow news trading in the evaluation phase and restrict it on funded accounts, but rules differ. Read the exact rule for your account type before the event, and also check how your daily loss limit is calculated.
